The Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) Pharmacy offers a unique and comprehensive experience for residency training with a PGY-1 Community/Public Health Pharmacy Residency program.

This program seeks to build on the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and provide the resident with the knowledge and skills to become a competent practitioner in the community, academic and public health settings. Graduates of this program will have the clinical competence and skills necessary to manage a community pharmacy practice and effectively work as a public health pharmacist.

In addition, graduates will be skilled in applying for, leading, managing and determining tasks necessary for grant work, research projects and public health initiatives. Also, graduates will be prepared to counsel, educate and evaluate patients; teach students, teach public health program administrators, and provide pharmaceutical services to the population.

The residency offers numerous unique opportunities provided by the many different MSDH programs, including communicable disease, health services, and health protection to name just a few. The staffing component for the residency will be obtained through Flora Pharmacy in Flora, MS (15 miles from MSDH Pharmacy).

Graduates of this program will learn how to pursue initiatives that are focused on improving the health outcomes for the population, ensuring that systems are in place for all Mississippians to have the opportunity to make healthy choices and that engage pharmacists to work in their practice setting at the highest level. Graduates will also have a greater understanding of the value of the Pharmacist in public health settings.

The educational goals of this program include:

  • competence in community and clinical practice,
  • the ability to promote, implement and maintain community wellness, immunization and disease prevention programs,
  • develop effective leadership and project management skills and
  • precepting Doctor of Pharmacy students.

Collaborations

The resident(s) will have the opportunity to work with other state organizations including the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy, University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) and Mississippi Public Health Institute (MSPHI) on various projects and activities. There will also be a health policy rotation offered by the Center for Mississippi Health Policy.

Residency Positions

The program has two residency positions providing experiences at innovative practice sites. The residents are based in Jackson at the Mississippi State Department of Health Pharmacy. The work within the department’s program sites occurs in Jackson and the metro area, with the opportunity to travel throughout the state for various projects. The projects and needs from the pharmacy and program sites will vary from year to year, allowing our program to provide a varying pharmacy experience that will help strengthen and grow the residents’ understanding on the vast impact a pharmacist can have in a community.
